The 46th Platter's Wine Guide by Diner's Club International: This Year's Top Performers
19 November 2025 marked the launch of the 46th edition of the Platter's by Diners Club South Africa Wine Guide, this year once again fittingly celebrated at Eben Sadie's monument to South African wine in the Aprilskloof of the Swartland.
We're proud to share this exclusive first look at the rundown of top-rated SA wines and producers on the News24 Wine Vertical for the second time.
Still the most complete guide on South African wine, Platter’s team of 15 longtime tasters assesses a potential 8 000 wines each year. The 2026 edition has identified 36 Wines of the Year (the highest scoring wines in each category), 316 Five Star wines and brandies (95+ wines), over 430 Highly Recommended (94 point wines), and many Hidden Gems (168 excellent value and interesting wines), Buy Now Drink Later (130 wines to age), and Superquaffers (115 well-priced and drinkable).
There are also three top awards: Top Performing Winery of the Year, Editor’s Award Winery of the Year and Newcomer Winery of the Year. Plus, all the additional information, like opening times, legacy ratings, and available facilities, make this one of the most comprehensive guidebooks on SA wine.
Established in 1980 by John and Erica Platter, the Platter's Wine Guide was sold to Andrew McDowall and John Newsome in 1998, who hired Philip van Zyl to take over as editor. The tome was later acquired by Diner's Club International, which retained Philip as editor and added managing director to his title a few years later.
Throughout it all – this is his 28th edition – he and his team have held fast to the ideals on which the Guide is built: first and foremost, a Guide to help navigate the convoluted South African wine industry, and second, as a measure and record of SA wine quality.
“South African wines are growing in refinement, with silkier tannins, fresher overall balance and increasingly expressive fruit, while also expanding in both quality and interest as non-mainstream varieties find their way into bottle and stylistic diversity flourishes, from overtly fruit-driven wines to those shaped by flor-aged savouriness. It’s also encouraging to see a rise in sophistication and a greater willingness to push the envelope with wines that could be called ‘unfruity’: packed with flavour, yet with fruit playing a supporting role to savoury and umami character, texture, and the interplay between acidity and body. While the Platter's Five Stars have become a distinctive South African badge of honour, they implemented a 100-point rating scale to solidify its significance on the international stage of wine in 2015.
The description of a 95+ point wine, and by extension a five-star wine, reads: "Superlative. A South African Classic," indicating the top level of quality established via a series of tastings (tasters are assigned producers in a three-year cycle) that culminate in a blind tasting panel of all the best wines.
This year’s results are extensive, representing both the new and old guard winningly, and should offer you a comprehensive guide to help navigate SA wine in all its iterations.

The variety perhaps most associated with the dynamic and impressive Louw family venture on the cool slopes of Dorstberg in Durbanville is Sauvignon Blanc, a particular passion of the sixth-generation and incumbent winegrower Thys Louw of Diemersdal.
The eight varietal versions (the Noble Late Harvest an occasional ninth) are individual, distinctive and, together, account for a serious, six-digit number of bottles, led by the crowd-pleasing ‘estate’ bottling, with Wild Horseshoe the most limited. The latest, The Globe, made and aged in a sphere of glass, caused a sensation when released as SA’s most expensive sauvignon. ‘It sold out in just over two weeks; there’s a long list of buyers for the new vintage, which is great for Diemersdal... and for sauvignon. ’
Thys believes ‘extensive’ doesn’t mean ‘lack of quality’, and his view is emphatically supported by the stellar harvest of ratings this edition, including a phenomenal total of six maximum five stars, which earns Diemersdal the guide’s highest accolade, Top Performing Winery of the Year.

With venerable dry-farmed bushvines as the medium, and mostly Chenin Blanc the lens, husband-and-wife team Chris and Suzaan Alheit say their holy grail is an authentic expression of the Cape, year in, year out.
That ideal was severely tested in 2024. The 100-year storm that washed away bridges and mountainsides in September 2023, raged during flowering in the Fire By Night vineyard on their Paardeberg farm, slashing yields to a half-ton per hectare. Several other far-flung grape sources also suffered. The fact that the Alheits were able to achieve any five-star scores in this most challenging vintage, let alone a magnificent total of six maximum ratings, speaks volumes about their character and expertise.
They blew us away in 2012 with their debut Cartology, and have kept doing so with all their wines, year in, year out. This edition we’re delighted to reward them with a pinnacle accolade, Editor’s Award Winery of the Year, which recognises a winegrowing team who, based on performance in the current edition as well as track record, are ambassadors par excellence for SA wine.

Believing that sherry-style and fortified wines are an extremely important genre, Adi Badenhorst (of famed AA Badenhorst Family Wines) began crafting small batches in Swartland from home-grown grapes back in 2009.
But it was only in 2023 that the first bottling took place, and at last the wines are rolling out. Bottling in limited runs allows Adi and his collaborator in the later stages of the project, Selma Willemse, to capture what they call 'the unrepeatable nuances of each barrel, harvest and season, offering profound complexity and depth'. It's the latter qualities that particularly impressed us while tasting the wines, plus the care, craftsmanship and patience that underlie the project. No less than three wines earn our maximum five-star rating, making this remarkable venture this edition’s well-deserved Newcomer Winery of the Year.
