The 45th Platter's Wine Guide by Diner's Club International: This Year's Top Performers
20 November 2024 marks the launch of the 45th edition of the Platter's by Diners Club South Africa Wine Guide, this year fittingly celebrated at Eben Sadie's newly completed shrine to South African wine in the Aprilskloof of the Swartland.
We're proud to share this exclusive first look at the rundown of top-rated SA wines and producers on the News24 Wine Vertical for the first time.
Still the most complete Guide on South African wine, Platter’s team of 11 longtime tasters assesses a potential 9000 wines each year. The 2025 edition has identified 27 Wines of the Year (the highest scoring wines in each category), 259 Five Star wines and brandies (95+ wines), over 344 Highly Recommended (94 point wines), and many Hidden Gems (167 excellent value and interesting wines), Buy Now Drink Later (170 wines to age), and Superquaffers (48 well-priced and drinkable).
There are also three top awards: Top Performing Winery of the Year, Editor’s Award Winery of the Year and Newcomer Winery of the Year. Plus, all the additional information, like opening times, legacy ratings, and available facilities make this one of the most comprehensive guidebooks on SA wine.
Established in 1980 by John and Erica Platter, the Platter's Wine Guide was sold to Andrew McDowall and John Newsome in 1998, who hired Philip van Zyl to take over as editor. The tome was later acquired by Diner's Club International, which retained Philip as editor and added managing director to his title a few years later.
Throughout it all – this is his 27th edition – he and his team have held fast to the ideals on which the Guide is built: first and foremost, a Guide to help navigate the convoluted South African wine industry, and second, as a measure and record of SA wine quality.

While the Platter's Five Stars have become a distinctive South African badge of honour, they implemented a 100-point rating scale to solidify its significance on the international stage of wine in 2015.
The description of a 95+ point wine, and by extension a five-star wine, reads: "Superlative. A South African Classic." indicating the top level of quality established via a series of tastings (tasters are assigned producers in a three year cycle) that culminate in a blind tasting panel of all the best wines.
This year's results are extensive, representing both the new and old guard winningly, and should offer you a comprehensive guide to help navigate SA wine in all its iterations.

That facility is a thing of finely detailed beauty, reflecting Eben’s legendary lack of compromise, with every function carefully planned and refined to perfection.
While he'll oversee the wine-making transition, his primary focus will remain on nurturing the precious vines that produce the Signature collection and the Old Vine Series, now known as District Series.

This guide's Editor’s Award Winery of the Year recognises a winegrowing team who, based on performance in the current edition as well as their track record, are ambassadors par excellence for SA wine.
If 'performance' simply means garnering top ratings or critical or peer acclaim, Hamilton Russell Vineyards' track record speaks for itself, with the recent induction of Emul Ross into the CWG an added affirmation. But if it also means consistently being the best version of oneself, and constantly striving to develop and improve, this winery's performance is exceptional. Custodian since 1991, Anthony Hamilton Russell likes to say there is comfort in knowing that the essence of what Hamilton Russell Vineyards does, remains unchanged.
Yet refinement is unceasing, and this edition includes adding new markets for the wines, already listed in over 30 Michelin restaurants; adding own composted chippings as mulch under all vines; regenerating soils to improve fungal and microbial diversity; and enhancing wood integration by using only bespoke barrels. This year being the estate's 50th anniversary, it's important to recall the ultimate 'tweak', by Anthony's father Tim, who prevailed over preconceptions, red tape, lack of plant material and many more challenges to realise his vision of growing wine in this cool climate, thereby redrawing SA's wine map.

Longtime winemakers, friends and collaborators Johann Fourie and Bertus Fourie have joined forces with European partners in this exciting new terroir-focused venture, intent on building a collection of wines from what they believe is the flagship variety of each of their chosen regions, thereby capturing both a ‘somewhereness’ and the essence of the grape in the bottle.
Debuting with aplomb this edition are a pinot noir from Walker Bay, chenin blanc from Swartland and grenache blanc from Paarl, all finely crafted and site expressive. But the chardonnay from Elgin eclipsed its siblings and garnered the maximum five star rating, an achievement which earns the ‘Place on Earth’ winery our Newcomer of the Year accolade.
