Serums To Use Based On Your Skin Type

By Dean Carter

Customising your skincare routine has never been easier through the introduction of serums into them. The rise of ingredient-focused skincare gave consumers a new-found control over getting exactly what is needed whether you have dry, oily, normal, sensitive or sensitive skin. It can be daunting since many different serums have active and inactive ingredients. We took the guesswork out of it with the serums you should use based on your skin type to get the best results.

Normal Skin

Working with normal skin means you’re able to try various serums without fear of putting your skin at major risk. Serums with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and using retinol occasionally, which works on all skin types, will keep your skin looking hydrated and refreshed.

Dry Skin

Hydration is key for dry skin and locking in moisture. A hyaluronic acid serum, along with humectants and ceramides are your champions for this. These ingredients help increase the moisture content in your skin which helps combat dryness and keeps your skin hydrated. They also aid in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Oily Skin

When it comes to controlling oil production, using a chemical exfoliant is the most effective way to help with it. An exfoliating serum with a BHA (Beta-hydroxy acid), AHA (Alpha-hydroxy acid) or a combination of both helps with skin cell turnover, which in turn helps with excessive oil overproduction. They also help dissolve dead skin cells, which also for deeper penetration of other oil-controlling products in your routine.

Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitive skin, highly fragrant and harsh products are most likely a no-go zone. Ingredient-focused serums are great for this as they don’t contain a fragrance. Soothing your skin and helping prevent irritation with the use of serums with tea extracts are great in that respect. Using an AHA for exfoliation, such as lactic acid, is also a great choice since they are gentler on the skin.

Combination Skin

Having combination skin is the trickiest to take care of. You can be oily in one area and then dry in another which can make adding a serum to your routine difficult. Going with a niacinamide serum for daily use is one of your best options as it helps to calm the skin, and increase hydration on the topical layer of your skin. This helps smoothen your skin texture and even out your skin tone. Peptides are also something to look out for too as they firm the skin which is overall beneficial for your skin.
