It’s been quite a journey for the beauty community with makeup and skincare trends as the rise of the skinfluencer happened and make up looks going minimalist. Unlikely celebrities such as Hailey Bieber became trendsetters for everything from Strawberry to Latte makeup. Now, we’re seeing the trends of yesteryear making a comeback, similar to the ongoing Y2K wave in fashion, while others are exiting stage left.

The rise in TikTok has also caused the trend cycle to be faster than ever. And with South Africa finally getting more big-name makeup and skincare brands, it’s been able to form part of the broader online conversations.

Keeping up with everything going on might be daunting so we’ve highlighted five beauty trends to stick around and five trends that deserve the boot.

Five Trends To Stay

Underpainting

The art of underpainting is a skill that was only privy to professional MUAs until Jennifer Lopez’s makeup artist Scott Barnes shared this skill with the masses on infamous beauty guru YouTuber Tati Westbrook's channel and still going strong. The key to underpainting is going heavy on liquid and cream products for your concealer, blush and contour before applying a light to medium coverage foundation. This gives you all the structure of those steps while allowing for a blended look.

Serum Revolution

Ingredient-forward skincare serums changed the game for consumers who no longer had to rely on claims regarding serums. Only a couple of years ago being knowledgeable of the benefits of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, retinol, vitamin C and other popular active ingredients wouldn’t be common knowledge. Now, you can fully customise your routine with what you need without unnecessary extras. A win all around that needs to stay put.

Brown Glazed Lips

While many people with darker skin tones have had dark lip liners as a staple in their makeup collection, it never really gained traction in other groups until the Brownie Glazed Lips trend. Lining your lips with a darker pencil is not only flattering but opens you up to more lipstick and lipgloss shades you might have passed on. It can stick around.

Exfoliations With Acids

Safely using chemical exfoliators has never been easier than now with BHA and AHAs being easily accessible. The stars of the show are squalene, glycolic, salicylic, and lactic acid. These truly changed the game and are here to stay.

Blush, Blush And More Blush

The best thing to happen to the Clean Girl Aesthetic trend was blush becoming a core step in beauty routines again. A magical step that brings warmth and structure to the face and can completely change a look for the better. A full glam face isn't complete until you've put on blush.

Five Trends That Can Go

10-Step Skincare Routine

The 10-step Korean skincare routine had everyone jumping on the KBeauty bandwagon in 2021. While KBeauty is still going strong, if you’re still committed to using multiple cleansers, doing several face masks, exfoliating with various acids and piling on various moisturising products all in one routine, it's time to trim things down. Your skin can only take so much, and you can achieve similar results in fewer steps without all the hassle.

No Makeup, Makeup

The time of the Clean Girl aesthetic has finally come to an end. While it was nice to have the ease of no foundation and light coverage products, it’s time to break out that eyeshadow palette and full-coverage foundation again and get into full glam.  We can't be happier to say goodbye to the natural look.

Soap Brows

Soap brows had their time in the sun, but it was time for them to go down and give way for some structure again. The trend worked great for people with full brows, those with sparse brows didn't have the same luck. While the trend is leaving, it did move everyone away from block brows with a middle ground reached between a sculpted and natural shape.

Faux Freckles

Along with the strawberry make up trend, faux freckles also gained traction as a central part of the look. On TikTok, challenges reigned supreme with various methods to achieve them which included using hair root cover spray or self-tanner. The results are wildly varied and are something that needs to stay in the past.

Overuse Of Active Ingredients

Active ingredients are great for achieving results in a very short timeframe. However, when you use too many of them in one sitting, they can have negative effects. The overuse of active ingredients can be detrimental and luckily there seems to be a move to only using what’s needed instead of using everything recommended by popular skinfluencers.
